Weeks 7: The 365 Declutter Challenge – House Guests!!! Before and After pics, too!

Hi Everyone! Sorry I missed doing a week 7 update! I’m hoping to get week 8 posted tomorrow and then I’ll be caught up.

Here’s what happened: Our dear friends who live out of state called to let us know they were coming into town for a funeral. I offered to let them stay here if they needed a place to stay. They accepted!

A couple of crazy things about this:

1. Am I crazy??? Have you seen the state of my house?? Serious disaster area!

2. This is a 3 bedroom house. We have 5 people in our family. They have 7. Last time I checked that means 12 people in a 3 bedroom house. Crazy! But super fun, too!

A couple of good things about this:

1. We were motivated to clean and declutter. We had to, or people would be standing, sitting, and sleeping on clutter.

2. These are awesome friends (they were both in our wedding). They know us well enough not to expect a super tidy neat and clean house.

Well, Mr. RSS was not kidding around about making progress in the basement. Here’s what he was able to accomplish in less than one day.

(FYI – these are before pics I took in January, so that rocking horse is in the pictures even though I got rid of it a few weeks ago):

Much better

What went out the door?

3 old computers

old computers

2 shoes (actually 3 individual shoes – 1 pair and 1 single), a book/cartridge from an old LeapPad (water damage), and a bag of miscellaneous clothes and kid stuff (I counted this as 10 things)

shoes, book, cartridge

7 boxes of mostly clothes (I counted each box as 15)

boxes of clothes

Soooo that means I had a lot of little x’s to make….

121 things out the door!

121 things out the door for week 7!!!

In summary: My husband is a decluttering rock star.

What have you been up to? Any decluttering?

Congratulations on organizing your space. Looks to me like you are just rearranging the clutter, need to get rid of way more stuff. To have that much stuff to begin with indicates you have a hoarding problem. You might want to look into this, or chances are, it’ll go right back to the way it was in a matter of time. I don’t mean to be mean at all.

Thanks for your comment, Debi. Of course there was some rearranging/organizing of stuff, but I hope you realize the main point of this project is to get rid of stuff. This week I got rid of 121 things! Woohoo! So far this year we have sent 251 things out the door. Don’t worry, I plan to keep going! Thanks for your concern about hoarding. I have looked into the hoarder issue, because I was concerned about it at one point, too. It seems that I am not a hoarder, but I do have a big problem with clutter for sure! In fact, that’s why I started this blog and this 365 project. πŸ™‚

Woohoo, Mr. RSS! You rock! Glad you were able to get some work done and spend time with friends.

  3. Melissa

Wow he is totally a rock star!

  4. Fantastic! What a big change in such a short amount of time! Great job!

  5. Lookin’ good!! I love before and after pictures! πŸ™‚ sometimes I think about doing them just for myself to see. lol
Oh, and if you keep going this strong I think you’ll end up getting rid of way more than 365!

Thanks Katy! I love before and after pictures, too! I am super excited seeing how close I am to my 365 goal! I will keep going for sure, but I haven’t decided if I should set a new goal, like maybe another 365 things? I guess I should just focus on getting to my original goal for now! πŸ˜€

Congrats to the two of you! Based on what you’ve shared here (which may not be the whole of the picture) it seems that Mr. RSS is a blitzkrieg-type declutterer: not all that often but like a whirlwind when it happens. This is a tendency that you guys can take advantage of!

I’ve been working steadily away at projects (not all are decluttering). Only one is huge and while I know what the barrier is, I havn’t figured out how to demolish that barrier yet. I have some other time-consuming tasks but it’s step-by-step, and making sure I keep up with the daily stuff.

Thanks, WilliamB! You hit the nail on the head with your description of Mr. RSS! πŸ˜€

Good luck on your projects. That keeping up with the daily stuff is key, isn’t it? And for me it’s hard to do even without extra projects.

Great work! It’s exciting to see how you are blowing through your chart so fast!

  8. Wow! What a great week. You are making fantastic progress. I smiled at the fact that you had to get rid of three shoes. That happens here as well. How does that happen? Where exactly do those single shoes go? Your posts really motivate me. I did donate quite a bit of our Mr. Potato head collection to the preschool where I’ve been working last week which was a bit of an accomplishment for me. I struggled more than my boys–how sad is that?

    • Elizabeth

Thanks, Jean! I know. 3 shoes. I’m thinking that other one will show up at some point down the road. Good job on the Mr. Potato head donation! We never had Mr. Potato head here, but he does seem like a fun guy. πŸ˜€

  9. I’m late to the party, as usual. You guys made some serious progress! I hope you had fun with your friends. πŸ™‚
